💤 Introduction: Sleep is Not Just Rest — It’s Repair
As we grow older, good sleep becomes one of the most essential — yet often neglected — tools for healthy ageing. While we might associate sleep with simply “resting,” the truth is that sleep is an active biological process that plays a critical role in:
- 🛡️ Supporting the immune system
- 🧠 Consolidating memory and maintaining brain function
- ❤️ Regulating heart health and blood pressure
- 🙂 Balancing emotional wellbeing and resilience
Yet, many people over 70 find themselves waking more frequently, falling asleep later, or feeling less refreshed in the morning. Why?
🌙 How Sleep Patterns Change As We Age
The body’s natural sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) becomes more fragile with age. Older adults may experience:
- Earlier wake times (often around 4–5am)
- Reduced deep sleep (non-REM stage 3)
- More frequent awakenings due to pain, need to urinate, or medications
- Difficulty falling back asleep after waking
This doesn’t mean poor sleep is inevitable — it simply means our routines, environment, and support systems must adapt to meet new needs.
🧠 Why Sleep Is Crucial for Brain Health
During deep sleep, the brain undergoes a “cleansing” process through the glymphatic system, which flushes out waste proteins linked to cognitive decline and memory loss. A lack of restorative sleep has been associated with a higher risk of dementia and depression in later life.
Equally important is the role of sleep in processing emotions and building psychological resilience — two key areas we explore in our Cognitive Resilience Hub.
👣 A Gentle First Step: Reflect on Your Current Sleep Routine
Before trying to “fix” sleep, begin with awareness. Ask yourself:
- Do I feel alert in the morning, or groggy?
- Do I wake up during the night — and if so, what time?
- What is my final thought before I close my eyes?
Gentle self-inquiry is the starting point for building better habits. Over the coming blogs, we’ll explore proven methods to improve sleep quality, naturally and sustainably.
🎁 Surprise Sleep Prompt: AI-Assisted Reflection
Ask your AI assistant (or write in a journal):
“What did I do today that calmed my nervous system?”
Do this each evening for 7 days. You’ll begin to notice the small actions that help your body unwind — and repeat them more naturally.
