How Nutrition Supports Healthy Lungs in Older Age

Respiratory Health Blog Series | Blog 6 of 10

What you eat can influence how well your lungs function – especially as you age. For older adults managing asthma, COPD or general breathlessness, a balanced diet can reduce inflammation, support immunity, and improve energy.

Why Diet Matters for Breathing

Healthy eating helps in three key ways:

  • It fuels the muscles involved in breathing
  • It reduces internal inflammation (which worsens lung conditions)
  • It strengthens immunity to fight chest infections

The British Nutrition Foundation recommends a variety of colourful fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 rich foods to support lung health.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Lung Function

Chronic lung conditions are linked to inflammation. These foods may help reduce it:

  • Oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines) – rich in omega-3
  • Leafy greens (spinach, kale) – packed with antioxidants
  • Turmeric and ginger – natural anti-inflammatory spices
  • Berries – rich in vitamin C and flavonoids

Foods That Support Immunity and Lung Repair

  • Red peppers & citrus fruits: High in vitamin C to support infection recovery
  • Eggs and mushrooms: Excellent natural sources of vitamin D
  • Nuts and seeds: Contain zinc, selenium and vitamin E for lung defence

Should I Avoid Dairy?

Some people find that dairy thickens mucus – but this is not true for everyone. The NHS advises trying lactose-free or low-fat dairy if you notice any mucus issues. Never eliminate whole food groups without proper guidance.

How Hydration Affects Lung Function

Water is essential for thinning mucus and easing coughing. Aim for 6–8 glasses daily unless advised otherwise by your GP. Include warm broths, herbal teas, and water-rich fruit like melon and cucumber.

Weight and Lung Pressure

Extra weight can press on the lungs and diaphragm. Even modest weight loss can ease breathlessness in some older adults. Talk to your GP or dietitian before making major changes.

Simple Meal Ideas for Lung Support

  • Breakfast: Scrambled eggs with spinach and wholegrain toast
  • Lunch: Sardine salad with mixed greens, red pepper, olive oil
  • Dinner: Turmeric lentil stew with ginger and steamed vegetables
  • Snacks: Handful of almonds, orange slices, oatcakes with hummus
