Pulmonary Rehabilitation – A Gamechanger for Lung Conditions
Respiratory Health Blog Series | Blog 4 of 10
Breathlessness can feel scary – especially when it limits your independence. But there’s good news: pulmonary rehabilitation has been proven to improve strength, stamina, and confidence in people with long-term lung conditions. It’s not just exercise – it’s a roadmap to living better.
What Is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
Pulmonary rehab (PR) is a structured programme of physical activity, education, and breathing support for people with lung conditions such as COPD, chronic asthma, bronchiectasis, and interstitial lung disease. It’s typically delivered in a group format over 6 to 8 weeks – but home-based options are also available.
Evidence shows that PR improves quality of life, reduces breathlessness, and lowers the risk of hospitalisation.
Who Can Benefit?
You may be eligible for NHS pulmonary rehab if you:
- Have COPD, asthma, or another diagnosed lung condition
- Struggle with daily tasks due to breathlessness or fatigue
- Have had a recent hospital admission due to your breathing
- Want to improve confidence and reduce medication reliance
Ask your GP, respiratory nurse, or consultant for a referral. You cannot self-refer directly through the NHS, but our Zoom-based classes can support you in the meantime.
What Happens in a PR Class?
Sessions are usually run by a team of NHS professionals including physiotherapists, nurses, and occupational therapists. A typical class might include:
- Gentle exercises adapted to your needs (sitting or standing)
- Education about inhaler technique, medication, and pacing
- Breathing strategies and relaxation tools
- Group discussion, peer encouragement, and progress tracking
Is It Safe for Over-70s?
Yes. All exercises are tailored to your ability and health. Even participants in their 80s report improved confidence, strength, and less fear of breathlessness after completing the programme.
Home-based kits and telephone-guided versions are available if you can’t attend in person. Contact your NHS provider or local Integrated Care Board (ICB) for alternatives.
