We Move Better — Together
Movement isn’t just about muscles — it’s about motivation. Studies show that older adults are far more likely to stick with an exercise routine when they do it with others, even online.
Whether it’s a friendly class over Zoom or a local walking group, social movement supports mental wellbeing, emotional resilience, and daily structure.
At the Primary Health Awareness Trust, we’ve seen firsthand how gentle group exercise builds confidence and reduces isolation — especially for older adults living alone or managing long-term conditions.
Why Group Exercise Is So Effective
- ✅ Increases motivation and accountability
- ✅ Provides social contact and routine
- ✅ Reduces loneliness and depression risk
- ✅ Boosts enjoyment and mental energy
- ✅ Builds community and shared purpose
Even if the exercise is light — the social connection is powerful. According to Age UK research, staying connected is just as important for longevity as staying active.

Friendship, Confidence, and Routine
One of the biggest benefits of regular group exercise is the impact on emotional wellbeing. Many participants tell us that attending classes gives them a sense of purpose and connection — even on difficult days.
You may even find yourself looking forward to the chat just as much as the stretch.
Part of Our Cognitive Resilience Strategy
Group-based activities activate regions of the brain linked to memory, social reasoning, and language — which supports long-term cognitive resilience.
Our Cognitive Resilience & AI Literacy Hub explores how group movement, laughter, and digital confidence can help protect mental sharpness in older age.
🎁 Surprise Prompt of the Week
“If you were to name your ideal movement group, what would you call it? Write it down. Would you lead, join, or teach?”
Engaging imagination and purpose like this helps activate deeper social and emotional motivation for health.
