You Can Still Move — Even from a Chair

If you’re recovering from illness, dealing with long-term conditions, or simply find standing exercises difficult, chair-based movement offers a gentle, safe and effective way to stay active.

Many older adults worry they’re “too old” or “not strong enough” for exercise — but that couldn’t be further from the truth. With the right approach, movement can meet you exactly where you are.

In fact, the Age UK guidelines recommend seated exercise as a proven way to maintain independence, prevent falls, and boost confidence after injury or inactivity.

Benefits of Chair-Based Exercise

  • ✅ Improves posture and joint mobility
  • ✅ Supports blood circulation and heart health
  • ✅ Builds strength without stress on joints
  • ✅ Helps manage arthritis, stiffness and swelling
  • ✅ Enhances balance, reducing fall risk
  • ✅ Boosts mood, confidence and brain function

It’s not about intensity — it’s about consistency. Even 10–15 minutes a few times a week can lead to real progress.

3 Gentle Chair-Based Exercises You Can Try Today

🦵 1. Marching Knees (Seated)

Sit tall in a firm chair. Slowly lift one knee at a time like you’re marching. Repeat 10 times on each side.

💪 2. Arm Raises

Raise your arms to shoulder height (one at a time or together), then lower gently. You can add light tins or small weights later if comfortable.

🦶 3. Toe & Heel Taps

Keep your heels on the floor and lift your toes, then reverse. Repeat slowly to improve ankle mobility and leg circulation.

Important: Always sit in a sturdy, armless chair on a non-slip surface. Breathe naturally and never hold your breath during movement.

Boosting Confidence Through Movement

Many older adults say they feel more confident, hopeful and emotionally stronger after attending just a few chair-based sessions. Movement can help reconnect you to your body and lift your spirits — especially if you’ve felt isolated or uncertain since an illness or fall.

Cognitive Resilience Tip

When we coordinate our limbs — even in small ways — we activate areas of the brain responsible for memory, attention and spatial awareness. This is vital for fall prevention and mental agility.

Our Cognitive Resilience Hub shares how movement, technology and memory support can work together to build a stronger, more connected brain.

🎁 Surprise Prompt of the Week

“As you do a seated exercise, take a deep breath and quietly say: ‘My body is moving, my mind is strong.’ Notice how your body responds to encouragement.”

This simple mantra creates a neurological link between movement and confidence. Keep repeating it during your exercises.
