Adapting Exercise for Long-Term Conditions

Many older adults live well with one or more long-term health conditions.
With thoughtful adaptation, safe and enjoyable exercise is still very possible.

General Principles

  • Always consult your GP before starting new activity
  • Choose low-impact exercises
  • Progress gradually and listen to your body
  • Allow extra recovery time as needed

Examples of Adapted Activities

  • Chair-based exercises for reduced mobility
  • Gentle walking with rests
  • Water-based exercise to reduce joint strain
  • Breathing exercises for respiratory conditions
  • Yoga and Tai Chi for flexibility and calm
