🧠 Caring for Someone with Dementia – A Daily Survival Guide
By Primary Health Awareness Trust | Author: The Primary Health Awareness Trust Team
The Reality Behind the Diagnosis
Dementia doesn’t just affect memory. It changes mood, sleep, communication, and sometimes even personality. Carers often feel isolated in these changes — as though the person they love is gradually slipping away.
This guide is here to help you survive the daily challenges with practical tips, compassion, and support that recognises your role as both caregiver and grieving companion.
1. Build a Predictable Daily Routine
Dementia thrives on confusion — but routines offer stability. Try to:
- Keep mealtimes, bathing, and bedtime consistent
- Use visual aids or whiteboards for daily schedules
- Avoid sudden changes in environment or routine
Familiarity reduces anxiety, especially during late afternoon or “sundowning” hours.
2. Speak with Simplicity and Calm
It’s easy to feel frustrated when repeating yourself — but communication can stay loving, even when words are lost. Try:
- Short, clear sentences
- One instruction at a time
- Soft facial expressions and tone
- Using touch or visual cues as reassurance
Above all, avoid arguing. Join their reality — don’t force them into yours.
3. Recognise Emotional Triggers
Common causes of distress include:
- Noise or overcrowded rooms
- Overstimulating TV or radio
- Confusing mirrors or shadows
- Fatigue or dehydration
Keep a simple “soothing box” with calming music, photos, or textured items they enjoy.
4. Look After Yourself, Too
It’s easy to lose yourself in the cycle of caring. But if you burn out, the risk to both of you increases. Build in:
- Mini breaks — even 15 minutes outside
- Regular hydration and nutrition for you
- Asking for help — even once a week
- Respite support or sitting services (ask your GP or council)
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s protective.
5. Connect with Others on the Same Path
Try one of the following:
- Memory cafés – informal, local meet-ups for carers and people with dementia
- Online forums – such as Dementia UK and Alzheimer’s Society Talking Point
- Zoom support groups – check our Community Wellness Hub
Even short conversations with people who understand can ease the emotional load.
🧠 Surprise Prompt: “Resilience Reminder Builder”
Try this:
“Describe one moment today that made you smile — even if small. Use AI to turn it into a 3-line resilience reminder you can reread tomorrow when things feel harder.”
These reminders reinforce strength during difficult days. More prompts in our Cognitive Resilience Hub.
You’re Doing More Than You Know
Every cup of tea, every soft voice, every clean jumper — it all matters. You are the continuity in a world that’s shifting for them. That is not small work. That is profound care.
We see you. And you are not alone.
