🔥 Carer Burnout – Spotting the Signs Early

What Is Carer Burnout?

Carer burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by the prolonged stress of caring for another person. It’s especially common in older adults who provide daily care for loved ones while juggling their own health and home life.

You don’t have to be caring 24/7 to feel burnt out. Burnout can creep in even when you think you’re “managing.”

Common Early Warning Signs

  • Constant fatigue even after sleep
  • Short temper or irritability over small things
  • Withdrawing from friends, hobbies, or conversations
  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
  • Feeling helpless, trapped, or guilty
  • Not recognising yourself anymore

Carers often ignore these signs, pushing through out of love or duty. But left unaddressed, burnout can lead to depression, anxiety, heart issues, or serious health decline.

Why Older Carers Are More Vulnerable

As we age, our bodies take longer to recover from stress. If you’re over 60, burnout can impact your immune system, memory, and resilience more quickly than in younger years. Many older carers are also dealing with:

  • Their own long-term conditions (arthritis, diabetes, heart disease)
  • Bereavement or financial strain
  • Reduced access to social or digital support

This combination makes prevention even more critical.

How to Protect Yourself – Even in Small Ways

  • 💬 Talk to your GP — ask to be added to the carer register
  • 🌱 Build “micro-breaks” into your day (even 5 minutes counts)
  • 📅 Use a weekly planner to set boundaries and review your energy levels
  • 🤝 Connect with other carers through local councils, Age UK, or Carers UK
  • 🛏️ Prioritise restorative sleep and gentle movement (like chair yoga or walks)

You don’t need to fix everything at once. One supportive change — a regular phone call, a postponed chore, or an honest conversation — can begin to relieve the pressure.
